Just off Hwy. 169 and tucked away down a gated country road is one of Muskoka’s jewels:  Oviinbyrd Golf and Fine Dining Club.  A private golf club in all respects, Oviinbyrd is limited to a select membership that is fortunate enough to enjoy world-class golf in all respects.

What makes the club so unique is its fine dining membership that allows its members to enjoy the very best of the culinary arts.  The staff is hand picked with many who are graduated of the Stratford Culinary Arts Institute.

I am fortunate enough to be a member of this treasured spot golf club and recently dined there. The tasting menu always starts with an amuse bouche which was a delicately prepared tuna tartar.  This evening’s appetizers included a sous vide bite-sized scallop garnished with local accompaniments, a wild leak & red potato soup with poached potatoes & cheddar tuile egg yolk, as well as a seared scallop, sous vide asparagus, lomo jerky morels, and brown butter.  A particularly creative appetizer featured “steak frites” which included rib eye carpaccio, mini frites, pickled red pearl onion leaves, green garlic aioli, and dehydrated ketchup.

For our mains, I selected Quail with morel & green garlic stuffed breast, confit leg, pearl barley & sweet potato cabbage roll. The rest of the guests at my table decided to have the lamb loin with fennel pollen & coriander sausage, braised shoulder, chick peas, and bagna cauda sauce.

Dessert was beautifully presented. Normally we like to share one or two, but each of us just had to have his or her own. We started with the roasted banana fritter with black sesame ice cream & green tea sabayon, followed by the compressed ataulfo mango with coconut & tamarind ice and coconut meringues, the rhubarb tart with fromage blanc and black pepper tuile. We also shared a Canadian cheese plate that included a blue cheese, smoked gouda, and aged cheddar accompanied by sweet crisps.

Oviinbyrd is a dream come true and if you have a friend, family member or an event that gains you access to this club, then don’t think twice. Run!
